Commvault Cloud Backup & Recovery for OpenShift Kubernetes
Commvault Cloud Backup & Recovery for Kubernetes is a cloud-native cyber-resilience solution that helps deliver comprehensive backup, restore, recovery, and application mobility for Kubernetes-orchestrated workloads — including those running on Red Hat OpenShift. It offers native protection of containerized applications, Kubernetes objects, and persistent storage across all CNCF-certified Kubernetes distributions, with unified protection workflows for both containers and virtual machines within Red Hat OpenShift environments. The solution supports scalable, SLA-driven policies, automated discovery of applications and namespaces, flexible deployment models, REST APIs for automation, and centralized management across hybrid cloud infrastructures.
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (RHOCP), Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO), and Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) versions 4.9 through 4.19 are supported for Kubernetes workload protection.
Commvault protects:
· Namespaces
· Kubernetes objects (Deployments, StatefulSets, ConfigMaps, Secrets, CRDs)
· PersistentVolumeClaims and associated PersistentVolumes
· Application metadata and resource definitions
Ephemeral volumes such as emptyDir and certain hostPath volumes are not protected.
1. Connect Commvault to the OpenShift cluster via the Kubernetes API.
2. Discover namespaces and workloads automatically.
3. Assign protection plans (RPO, retention, immutability).
4. Perform incremental backups of Kubernetes resources and persistent volumes.
5. Restore objects, namespaces, or volumes as needed.
OpenShift and CSI drivers provide snapshotting capabilities but do not offer:
· Cross-cluster recovery
· Immutable, isolated backup copies
· Unified management across hybrid environments
· Centralized reporting across VMs, databases, SaaS, and containers
· Integrated ransomware detection (where licensed)
Commvault complements native capabilities with enterprise cyber resilience.
