Overview

i2i 5G UPF is the user plane network function of the i2i 5G Core network. It is a cloud-native, container-based solution compliant with 3GPP Rel-16 standards. It can be deployed, auto-scaled, and upgraded quickly and easily.

i2i 5G UPF is responsible for forwarding/routing, classifying, measuring, and QoS enforcement of mobile subscriber packets, It acts as a bridge between base stations, other UPFs and data networks. i2i 5G UPF provides performance metrics, logs, alarms, and statistics by issuing periodic or on-demand counters which can be used by the EMS (Element Management System) for KPI measurements and reporting purposes.

Main Functionalities and Capabilities: Interconnection to data networks and (R)AN
Packet routing & forwarding
QoS policy enforcement
Charging and usage monitoring and reporting
Anchor point for Intra-/Inter-RAT mobility (when applicable).
External PDU Session point of interconnect to Data Network.
Packet routing & forwarding (e.g. support of Uplink classifier to route traffic flows to an instance of a data network, support of Branching point to support multi-homed PDU Session).
Packet inspection (e.g. Application detection based on service data flow template and the optional PFDs received from the SMF in addition).
User Plane part of policy rule enforcement, e.g. Gating, Redirection, Traffic steering).
Traffic usage reporting.
QoS handling for user plane, e.g. UL/DL rate enforcement, Reflective QoS marking in DL.
Additional Functionalities and Capabilities: Uplink Traffic verification (SDF to QoS Flow mapping).
Transport level packet marking in the uplink and downlink.
Downlink packet buffering and downlink data notification triggering.
Sending and forwarding of one or more "end marker" to the source NG-RAN node.
Packet duplication in downlink direction.
