JPL Cloud Native 5G Session Management Function of 5G SA Core
The 5G SMF is a fundamental element of the 5G Service-Based Architecture (SBA). The SMF is primarily responsible for interacting with the decoupled data plane, creating, updating, and removing Protocol Data Unit (PDU) sessions and managing session context with the User Plane Function (UPF). The SMF acts as the external point for all communication related to various services offered and enabled in the user plane. The solution also decides how the policy and charging treatment for these services is applied and controlled. It configures traffic steering at the UPF to route traffic to the corresponding Data Network (DN). The SMF manages the local enforcement to apply Quality of Service (QoS) SLAs (VPLMN), collects charging data, and supports the charging interfaces.
The JPL SMF supports IMS Protocol Data Unit (PDU) Session Creation and fetches the P-CSCF addresses to be sent to the UE during initial attach over NR. It also supports multi-PLMN, maintaining a list of PLMNs and each of their unique IDs. The UEs can receive one or multiple PLMN identities in a given cell.
The JPL SMF is responsible for selection and control of the appropriate UPF for data transfer. A Protocol Data Unit (PDU) session is associated to one S-NSSAI and one Data Network Name (DNN).
The SMF supports Inroamer and Outroamer use cases with PDU establishment, modification, and release.
